Our Parish
The Cathedral of St Nicholas in Brisbane is the oldest Russian Orthodox parish in Australia. The church was completed and began its services in 1927. Since then there have been a number of additions to the church building, mainly to be able to fit the ever-growing number of parishioners.
When the church was built, it was constructed to serve the small Russian community, who had escaped the horrors of war in China, Russia and Europe. Since then, our Parish has become home to an ever-growing number of immigrants and visitors from the Motherland, Russia. Many people find out about our Parish and want to visit both the Church services and receive spiritual nourishment.
Our parish priest, Archpriest Gabriel Makarov, is very active and has many functions and activities organised throughout the year.
The church is physically situated in close proximity to the famous Gabba Cricket grounds. The grounds host regular sporting activities such as: AFL games (Gabba is home to the Brisbane Lions) and Cricket matches, both Day and Night games, Test matches and the new format, Twenty 20 games.
Services are held every weekend, with an All-Night Vigil beginning on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. which ends shortly at approximately 8:30 p.m.). Hours and Liturgy begin at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. On ever second Sunday, the Parish Cafe “Cafe Myra” operates out of the Church Hall. Coffees and tea can be purchased for the most reasonable price in Brisbane. Many functions are organised throughout the year – so it is a good idea to watch our News & Events for the next event. Check our parish calendar to see the schedule for weekday feasts. We hope to have you visit our parish soon.
